Environment

The Chula Vista Nature CenterWorking closely with our community and neighbors on environmental initiatives has long been one of the keys to our business success. We are committed to protecting and preserving San Diego Bay, reducing emissions and waste, and continuously striving to reduce our impact on the environment.

We have a close working relationship with local, state and federal regulatory agencies, and also work with the Port of San Diego on environmental issues. Our environmental efforts go far beyond the various environmental regulations set forth by these regulators. We have implemented a comprehensive ISO certified Environmental Management System (EMS) throughout the shipyard. NASSCO was the first shipyard in the nation to achieve this certification. Through the EMS, we are able to standardize environmental practices, set operating standards, facilitate research and development activities and measure the results of our work.

NASSCO has implemented several programs that have helped us to meet or exceed the stringent standards established by the California Air Resources Board for reducing diesel emissions. We began installing new, cleaner engines in our diesel gantry cranes in 2001, well in advance of a 2009 regulatory deadline. To further reduce emissions, we voluntarily equipped our six largest gantry cranes with state-of-the-art emission control "after-treatment" systems. We are continuing to reduce emissions through on-going initiatives to retire, replace, or retrofit diesel engines in mobile equipment such as heavy duty trucks, forklifts, and tugboats. Additionally, through voluntary improvements to our recycling programs and trash sorting and compacting systems, we have reduced truck traffic to the landfill by more than 80%, which has also contributed to a reduction in diesel and greenhouse gas emissions.

Our environmental efforts don't end at the shipyard gate. We also participate in numerous community activities that promote environmental responsibility and sustainability.
