Water

Our location on San Diego Bay requires us to be protective of this important regional asset. General Dynamics takes our obligation as caretaker of the Bay very seriously, and we have dedicated significant shipyard resources to this effort.

Our water quality initiatives include:

  • Industrial wastewater treatment: Industrial wastewater is processed by an on-site treatment facility to remove contaminants before the water is discharged into the sewer system.
  • Stormwater collection system: 100% of all stormwater that falls or accumulates on the shipyard is collected and treated before being released into the municipal sewer system. No stormwater flows directly into San Diego Bay.
  • Spill response: NASSCO's Fire Department and Incident Response Team are on site and on call 24 hours a day to quickly respond in the event of a hazardous material spill.
  • A first-of-its-kind ion exchange system to treat various process discharges: This state-of-the-art system ensures NASSCO's permitted discharges are well within Federal and state requirements. The sophisticated 300 gallon per minute ion exchange system runs constantly to capture contaminants and cleanse the water. It works like a catalytic converter. It does not filter the water, but rather changes it on an ionic level, removing trace metals in the process. The result is that the water released from this system at NASSCO is cleaner than the Bay itself. NASSCO is the first shipyard in the United States to have such a system in operation.
