- Port of San Diego Public Art Program
NASSCO is participating in the Port of San Diego’s public art program and has donated a 10-foot-high steel tree sculpture entitled “Arbor Urbanus Metallicus.” The tree was designed by local artist Jim Frost and was constructed by students in NASSCO’s steel training program at the shipyard (left). It was transported to its site on the North Embarcadero of San Diego Bay by NASSCO’s tugboats and is shown here being erected by NASSCO’s rigging department. A dedication ceremony was held on March 13, 2005.

Pollution Prevention Workshop
NASSCO launched National Pollution Prevention Week with community outreach training for automotive repair and auto body shops in its neighboring community of Barrio Logan. The American Lung Association, Air Pollution Control District, Department of Environmental Health, Hazardous Materials Division, and US Environmental Protection Agency provided presentations that were simultaneously translated into Spanish. This was the first time Federal, State and local regulatory agencies joined with business and community members in conducting a pollution prevention and compliance assistance workshop.

Chollas Creek Cleanup Events
NASSCO is located at the mouth of Chollas Creek and is dedicated to protecting this natural resource, which has been adversely impacted by the illicit dumping of trash and debris and pollution from storm water run-off. The NASSCO Chollas Creek Cleanup Committee (NC4) conducts three cleanups per year -- Earth Day Creek-to-Bay Cleanup in association with I LOVE A CLEAN SAN DIEGO (ILACSD) in April; Operation Clean Sweep, in association with the San Diego Port Tenants Association in June; and California Coastal Cleanup Day, also in association with I LOVE A CLEAN SAN DIEGO in September.
Additionally, NASSCO serves on the Groundwork Chollas Steering Committee, a grassroots campaign to restore the entire length of Chollas Creek from Lemon Grove to San Diego Bay. Partners on this project include the Sierra Club and the National Park Service.
