NASSCO realizes that responsible management of the companys solid waste is good for the environment and can offset costs through the sale of recyclable materials. Solid waste awareness is an ongoing part of the work program at the shipyard. For example:
- Recycling. All employees are responsible for segregating waste materials into containers for reuse. Paper, cardboard, wood, steel and scrap metals are recycled. Spent grit blast materials are used in making concrete. The company also operates a recycling still on-site that recovers solvents used for cleaning manufacturing equipment and marine systems.
- Hazardous materials management. Separate, distinctively labeled drums are used to store each type of hazardous waste collected on site. Full drums are transferred to a hazardous materials collection area for shipment to offsite disposal operations. Accumulation sites in the shipyard are frequently monitored and inspected for timely and compliant disposal processing.
