NASSCO takes seriously its stewardship of the portion of San Diego Bay used by the shipyard. A resident of the bayfront for more than 45 years, the company has a number of facilities and practices in place to protect the water quality of the Bay. These include:
- Rainwater collection system. All rainwater that falls on the shipyard is collected by a system of sumps, pumps, asphalt curbs and holding tanks. Rainwater that falls on blast, paint and vehicle maintenance areas is processed through NASSCO's on-site wastewater treatment facility before being discharged into the municipal sewer system. No rainwater flows directly into the Bay.
- Storm water filtration. NASSCO and the National Shipbuilding Research Program have jointly funded a $1.2 million research project to develop an on-site system that can filter out dissolved metals and particles suspended in storm water runoff. If the system proves successful, properly filtered water will be able to be directly discharged into San Diego Bay, greatly reducing local sewer system loads. Such a system has the potential for wide application at other facilities around the Bay.
- Wastewater treatment. Industrial wastewater is processed by an on-site treatment facility. Contaminants are removed before the water is discharged into the sewer system.
- Spill response. The NASSCO Fire Department and Incident Response Team are on site and on call 24 hours a day to quickly respond in the event of a hazardous material spill.
