SAN DIEGO, July 16, 2012 – Inspired by such facts as every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, and more than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day, General Dynamics NASSCO employees in San Diego, Calif., and Norfolk, Va., quickly rolled up their sleeves. The result was the collection of 80 pints of blood in a single day between General Dynamics NASSCO's bi-coastal shipbuilding and repair operations.

A total of 63 pints of blood was collected at NASSCO's two San Diego locations, an amount which has the potential to save the lives of 189 people. NASSCO-Norfolk had a total of 22 employees participate in this year's blood drive, donating a total of 17 pints of life-saving blood over a four-hour period.

Donald Dame, vice president of Human Resources for General Dynamics NASSCO, said that American Red Cross representatives at both General Dynamics NASSCO locations were "extremely impressed" by the willingness of NASSCO's healthy employee volunteers who contributed to this company-wide effort. According to the American Red Cross, the need for blood donations is growing, and healthy adults everywhere have the opportunity to support this cause. General Dynamics NASSCO employees responded to the call, providing life-saving support to those who are sick and in need of blood. General Dynamics NASSCO intends to hold bi-coastal blood drives on a regular basis.
