San Diego County Board of Supervisors Honors NASSCO for Environmental Performance

September 18, 2001 -- SAN DIEGO, CA -- National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) announced today that it has been recognized by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors for becoming the first private shipyard in the United States to voluntarily gain ISO 14001 certification for its comprehensive Environmental Management System and environmental protection policies. NASSCO is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).

ISO 14001 is a voluntary international standard that establishes the requirements for a company’s Environmental Management System. In order to qualify for ISO 14001, NASSCO developed and implemented a multimedia source reduction plan, addressing hazardous and solid waste disposal, air emissions, water discharges and energy consumption.

Richard Vortmann, President of NASSCO, said, "NASSCO is an environmental leader in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry. We are committed to continuously improving our environmental protection performance and to reducing all types of waste. ISO 14001 establishes a systematic framework for incorporating environmental protection into our overall management strategy," Vortmann added. "The ISO 14001 standard is an effective method of fostering pollution prevention."

As a result of its continuing environmental efforts, NASSCO received a Proclamation presented by County Supervisor Greg Cox commending the company for embracing the principles of pollution prevention and the highest standards of environmental performance. September 17-23 has been declared National Pollution Prevention Week by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the California Environmental Protection Agency and September 18th has been declared "National Steel and Shipbuilding Day" throughout San Diego County.
