NASSCO Receives Pollution Prevention Award from California EPA

March 10, 2003 -- SAN DIEGO, CA -- National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has received an award from the California Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of pollution prevention programs initiated by the shipyard during National Pollution Prevention Week in 2002.

Edwin Lowry, Director of the California EPA’s Department of Toxic Substances Control, presented the award to NASSCO for implementing a wide-ranging program of activities targeted at improving air and water quality and managing solid waste. "We have followed a three-part environmental improvement effort at NASSCO that includes pollution prevention in the shipyard, training for employees, subcontractors and suppliers, and community outreach," said Richard Vortmann, president of NASSCO. "We used National Pollution Prevention Week 2002 as a platform to expand our efforts and introduce new projects in each of these areas."

NASSCO received the California EPA award for a number of new initiatives:

  • In cooperation with the American Lung Association, the Southern California Air Pollution Control District, the Department of Environmental Health’s Hazardous Materials Division, and the US Environmental Protection Agency, NASSCO launched community outreach training for automotive repair and auto body shops in its neighboring community of Barrio Logan.
  • Each year, over 100 customers, suppliers and subcontractors receive training in regulatory compliance and pollution prevention in accordance with NASSCO’s Environmental Management System. In 2002, the company added an annual Environmental Performance Review to the training requirement. This evaluation program provides organizations a means of measuring their success in meeting NASSCO's commitment to the environment.
  • The company began a program of sending monthly "Environmental Grams" ("E-Grams") to employees as an added component of the company’s pollution prevention training. Topic areas include pollution prevention at home, on the roadways and in the shipyard.
  • NASSCO joined with the "I Love A Clean San Diego" organization and the City of San Diego’s Storm Water Division to participate in the 18th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, which is sponsored by the California Coastal Commission. NASSCO volunteers cleaned the Chollas Creek area next to the shipyard as well as surrounding NASSCO parking lots.
  • The company launched the first annual Environmental Star Awards Program in 2002. Environmental Star awards will be given each year to honor employees, customers and suppliers for their positive support of the company's environmental policies and procedures.

"The award from the California EPA is the company’s second major environmental award in the last two years," said Vortmann, noting that NASSCO had previously been the first commercial shipyard in the United States to be ISO 14001-certified for its comprehensive Environmental Management System. "We are proud of our employees, who have worked hard to make these awards possible."
